Pacific Asian Enterprises, Inc., today passed along a new collection of informal photos updating the construction progress of the new Nordhavn 120. The new-design megayacht will become the new queen of the Nordhavn fleet sometime late this year. According to PAE,

“Work continues on the first hull of the future queenship of the Nordhavn line: the Nordhavn 120. The latest photos released by the South Coast factory last week illustrate progress on various interior sections of the N120. Evident are the glossy build-up coats of varnish on the cherry wood which will serve to prime the satin finish that the owners have chosen for the woodwork. ‘Even in its unfinished state, the boat is so impressive,’ notes Project Manager Trever Smith.”

The first Kadey-Krogen 52′ arrived in the U.S. in time for the recent Seattle Boat Show and made her public debut there. The timing was so tight that the Kadey-Krogen team hadn’t had a chance to really begin the commissioning process, so in many of these photos you will see a fairly bare interior. I happen to like seeing it like this since I can use my imagination to decorate and outfit to my own taste.

Some things to notice:

The fabulous galley, including the Viking range and oven. I need to invite my superyacht chef friend Victoria Allman to come and play in this lovely workspace.

The office space below decks, which, in this two-stateroom configuration, really opens up the lower area with a functional, flexible area for work, navigation planning, and normal household management chores.

The expansive helm/dash setup. There’s room here for multiple big-screen displays so you can take advantage of all the latest technology, including monitoring, networked navigation and other sensors, and provide redundancy and flexibility. There is also plenty of room for two helm chairs; a feature I really like for longer passages.

The engine room has lots of space in which to work, especially with the standard single John Deere 6068AFM75, a continuous duty 231hp engine. Plenty of lighting and sturdy grab rails make those regular engine room checks underway more comfortable and safer.

Kadey-Krogen has released the first photos of the nearly complete first Krogen 52′, which should be leaving the factory shortly by ship in time (hopefully) to make its debut at Seattle’s Lake Union Boats Afloat Show September 14. This all-new design shows classic Krogen lines in a raised pilothouse model. There’s no mistaking what company this yacht is from. It’s a bluewater passagemaker and liveaboard yacht intended to meet the full-time needs of a couple or family. Enjoy the photos and if you get to the Boats Afloat Show, let us know what you think! Failing that, we may see hull #2 at the Fort Lauderdale Trawler Fest in early February next year.

Pacific Asian Enterprises, Inc., yesterday released the first published performance data for the new Nordhavn 63. The data are from the first hull, Silver Spray, which was just delivered to its owner at PAE’s Stuart, Florida commissioning facility. As you can see in the accompanying photo above, taken by the yacht’s owner, the N63 truly looks like the “next-generation” N62, the aft-pilothouse trawler that was a customer and fan favorite all through its production run. PAE has a lot riding on this yacht and it could become the right model to help bring the next generation of luxury distance-cruising boaters to the brand. It’s large enough to accommodate truly sumptuous appointments, yet small enough to be easily handled by a couple without crew.

The First Nordhavn 63, Silver Spray -- Photo Courtesy of PAE

In the table below, you can see that the sweet spot for cruising will be a little more than 8 knots. The fuel consumption basically doubles from 8.1 knots to 9.30 knots. And of course, as with nearly every other hull like this, if you slow down you get better range. Here you can see the NMPG at 7.55 knots is 1.42, which is very good performance for a yacht that displaces about 143,000 lbs.

The N63 hull incorporates an interesting design detail called a “maintenance strake.” We wrote about it here.

You can download the complete performance data sheet here.

Here is a link to the Nordhavn 63 webpage for full specs and information.

Delivery is scheduled for mid-2012, which is about as specific as you can be more than a year out from the milestone. A new interior designer has been chosen for hull number one. PAE said,

Destry Darr has been commissioned to develop a high-end custom interior for hull one. The look will be simple and elegant yet contemporary in its styling. African cherry has been selected as the primary hardwood to be used throughout.

The N120, when delivered, will supplant the N86 as the queen of the 16-yacht Nordhavn fleet, with a cool 80 feet between the smallest and largest member. The N120 is ABS-classed and designed and built to be certified to any international classification chosen by a buyer. Classification decisions by an owner normally depend on the intended use of the yacht (charter vs. private use) and may be dictated in some cases by an owner’s insurance company. Formal classification can involve a relatively significant expense to an owner, mainly due to the constant inspections and reviews required during the construction process, but as the size of the yacht increases, the cost as a percentage of the overall build declines and may be worthwhile in any event if the yacht is to be chartered.

You can read our earlier coverage of the Nordhavn 120 here.

The New Island Pilot IP535 Wide-Angle Bow Shot

That first photo above is the close-up of the starboard bow, while tied alongside. This second photo is a wider angle view from the same perspective. You can see the Island Pilot 435 tied up just outboard of the new IP535.

Stern Shot of the New Island Pilot IP535 with Island Pilot 435 to Left

This last photo is the truly telling perspective. Check out the size difference between the Island Pilot 435 on the left and the new IP535 on the right. It’s bloody huge!! A couple of quick observations:

The large aft cockpit now features a built-in table and seating.

There are steps to and from the swim platform both to starboard and port.

To starboard there is a large door/hatch to the lower deck; no crawling required.

A couple of steps up from the aft cockpit is a sort of mezzanine level with entrance to the salon and stairs real stairs athwart-ship to starboard that go up to the flybridge.

The flybridge is HUGE.

So is Reuben Trane’s lunchbox.

Any other observations??

The folks at Pacific Asian Enterprises just recently unloaded N63-01 from its freighter in Miami and brought it up to the Stuart completion center. It’s a beautiful boat; an evolution of the N55/60 hull with the aft pilothouse and overall look of the venerable N62 (but not quite the beam of that boat). In looking at the pictures P.A.E. posted on the Nordhavn brand website, I was drooling over the huge blank canvas of a dash in front of the helm and, naturally, I began to fantasize about what I would do if it was mine to outfit.

Helm of New Nordhavn 63-01 Before Electronics Installation. Photo courtesy of P.A.E.

Take a look at the photo above and imagine your favorite marine electronics installed in that non-glare acreage. It occurred to me that you could put a 32″ HDTV in that slot and use the latest Picture-in-Picture (PIP) controls to split the screen with whatever secondary input you want. On the other hand, one large screen like that means a single-point failure is going to be more of a pain in the rear. So, typical design philosophy says we should split that area into two large displays.

Wide View of the Pilothouse Aboard the New Nordhavn 63

I know I would prefer a black-box solution, with the displays fully customizable and redundant. If you really want to go the full belt and suspenders route, you could probably put a multifunction chartplotter/display on the far left side of the dash. In fact, since most owners of yachts this size will have two radars aboard, you could run the secondary radar as part of the chartplotter setup and use the primary radar on the main displays via black-box processor.

Salon Looking Forward Aboard New Nordhavn 63-01

I’d love to hear your own thoughts and ideas in the comments.

Galley Aboard the New Nordhavn 63-01

In the other photos in this piece, all courtesy of PAE, you can see there is quite a bit of room to spread out and relax in this pilothouse, as well as a beautiful salon and galley below. Delivery of N63-01 is set for a couple of months from now. We did a piece a while back on an interesting design feature of the hull of this Nordhavn here on OceanLines.

Kadey-Krogen Yachts said yesterday that the 50th edition of its highly successful 48′ North Sea line is the first to sport a series of now-standard modifications that significantly improve liveability aboard a boat that was already highly regarded in the liveaboard community. The company took the opportunity to re-badge the boat as the “Krogen 48′ AE,” the AE short for “Advanced Ergonomics.” The changes include updates to the layouts of the salon, pilothouse and flybridge, as well as the incorporation of home-sized stairs and bannisters to ease movement through the boat.

I would like to tease the good-natured Larry Polster, Kadey-Krogen’s vice president, about how “Advanced” these ergonomic changes really are, but the truth is, in the cruising world they ARE advanced. Not surprisingly, Kadey-Krogen collected the input from its customers to focus these updates on liveability — that somewhat undefined quality of making a boat easy to live aboard.

The Krogen 48′ North Sea has always been a favorite of long-distance cruisers, passagemakers and liveaboards. The size seems to be a particular sweet spot for couples who want to live aboard and the boat holds its value extremely well. A quick survey of Krogen 48′ models for sale on Yachtworld has even ten-year-old boats still well over the $700K mark, which means they really haven’t lost any value at all.

Back to the changes incorporated in the Krogen 48′ AE. Here’s a brief list:

An option for an L- or U-shaped settee along the starboard side of the salon

A table that both expands and raises and lowers to serve as coffee table and dining table for eight.

A larger galley forward to starboard, with a now-standard Viking four-burner range, household size fridge/freezer, convection microwave, and room for both a trash compactor and dishwasher.

A nearly floor-to-ceiling pantry opposite the galley, on the port side.

New, deep and wide steps steps up to the pilothouse, with a sturdy bannister for security.

A redesigned pilothouse that accommodates side-by-side helm chairs and a larger electronics console (hooray!!).

New molded steps outside the portside pilothouse door up to the boat deck and flybridge.

Boat deck will accommodate both a 13-foot tender, as well as a summer kitchen.

The flybridge helm is now off to starboard, with an L-shape settee to port.

Kadey-Krogen is going through some of its other models just coming intro production now and making some of these same ergonomic changes, particularly to steps and stairs. Does this kind of change exact a price in terms of space utilization? Of course. But the 48′ is big enough to handle the changes and the improvements in “liveability” are absolutely worth the price. If you’re going to live aboard one of these boats, the convenience and safety of actual human-sized stair treads and risers is more of a big deal than you might think.

For more pictures of the changes involved, check out the November blog entry of the Kadey-Krogen marketing team. You can get a good feel for the new helm and flybridge arrangement in the pictures there. You can check out the Krogen 48′ AE at Trawler Fest in Fort Lauderdale at the Bahia Mar January 27-29, and at the Miami International Boat Show (Sea Isle Marina location), from Febryary 17-21.
