Kadey-Krogen has released the first photos of the nearly complete first Krogen 52′, which should be leaving the factory shortly by ship in time (hopefully) to make its debut at Seattle’s Lake Union Boats Afloat Show September 14. This all-new design shows classic Krogen lines in a raised pilothouse model. There’s no mistaking what company this yacht is from. It’s a bluewater passagemaker and liveaboard yacht intended to meet the full-time needs of a couple or family. Enjoy the photos and if you get to the Boats Afloat Show, let us know what you think! Failing that, we may see hull #2 at the Fort Lauderdale Trawler Fest in early February next year.

Jet Tern Marine announced that it has sold the first hull of the new Ocean Explorer 92 model and that the boat is now under construction for an expected debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2012. Mark Seaton, of Selene Europe. provided us with the text of the press release announcing the sale, along with the photos you see here.

“The new “Ocean Explorer” range has been very well received as the Selene brand consolidates upon its successful “Ocean Trawler”’ concept to move into the 24 M + category of displacement yachts .

The 92 is the result of a multinational collaboration of designers and architects under Howard Chen’s design team leadership. Howard Chen has worked closely with renowned Dutch architect Guido De Groot and a group of International consultants to develop a contemporary take on the long range yacht whilst capitalizing on builder Jet Tern Marine’s high quality construction and reputation for experience and innovation in the displacement yacht sector.

A first look at the 92 shows a number of the Selene family traits with her powerful raised pilothouse, Portuguese bridge, and bulbous bow. But a contemporary twist is also apparent in the addition of the large side windows in the hull and stainless steel anchor pockets.

She takes the simple and proven concept of the fuel efficient and seaworthy long range yacht to a new level of luxury and with all of the advantages of GRP construction.

The first ordering customers are a US based partnership who were impressed with the design’s mixture of contemporary styling and sea going capability.”

Well, they don’t come any hotter than this. These photos were taken overnight when the future queen of the Nordhavn fleet was released from her molds at the factory in China. I’m going to let the photos speak for themselves, but I think you can get from them a couple of things — first, this is a big yacht. It looks like a Nordhavn but bigger and more powerful; like a professional baseball player on the “juice.” (Just kidding, PAE, really!).

You can also see how gorgeous the hull surfaces look, even before they’ve been finished and painted. There really is nothing like a composite mold to ensure the perfect finish. Also note the overall scale of the thing by the fellow walking down into the bulbous bow extension. Looks like there might be room in there for crew quarters! Updated specs and program info available from P.A.E. here.

Island Pilot is super-sizing its IPS-powered 435 into a new 531/2-foot model. New molds for the 535 have been built at the company’s yard in Zhuhai City, China, and Island Pilot reports that it has two firm orders already for the new yacht. If you really liked the 435 but wished it had a little more room, I think this new-but-familiar hull is going to be your ticket.

A CGI of the Flybridge Helm on the New Island Pilot IP535

While the new hull will provide the extra luxury and roomier accommodations requested by Island Pilot customers, the IP535′s performance capabilities will derive from the latest IPS variant from Volvo Penta — the IPS II 900. The announcement from Island Pilot noted that in addition to three “joystick” docking stations, the IP535 will be fitted with Volvo Penta’s new “Dynamic Positioning System,” which holds heading and position automatically using a GPS array mounted on the radar arch.

On the performance side, here’s what Island Pilot says,

Extensive tank testing plus computer simulations predict a top speed of 33 knots with economical fast-cruising speeds between 18 and 28 knots. At slower speeds, the IP535 will have similar economy to single-screw displacement trawlers and mid-speed, semi-displacement cruisers. The pair of 700hp, D-11 diesels is aft in a walk-in, stand-up, uncluttered engine room accessed through a weather-tight door in the cockpit. The spacious engine room allows easy access to all sides of the engines and generator with room left over for a work bench and tool storage. Other systems normally crowded around the motors are located in an easily-accessed “basement” under the galley sole.

More from the Island Pilot press release:

The IP535’s high-end performance is complimented by her inviting and accommodating cockpit layout, spacious flybridge arrangement, and interior appointments. A 9-foot U-shaped settee is the focal point of the cockpit and with its own canopy the space is perfectly laid out for outdoor entertaining. Owners can select to have a full summer kitchen including grill and wet bar either in the cockpit, on the flybridge, or in both locations. The flybridge has space for three helm chairs or a pair of twins and is outfitted with a pair 15-inch Garmin touchscreens, the same found at the lower helm.

A signature feature of all Island Pilot yachts is the bright, open feeling of the deck house, with plenty of glass and 360-degree vistas. The IP535 continues this tradition with even more space—the U-shaped settee is 11×6 feet—the LED HDTV is 46 inches—and room remains for a pair of barrel easy chairs and the raised helm chairs. At 12×14 feet 6 inches, the deck house is highly customizable. Forward of the deck house, under the great expanse of windscreen, is the “great room” with the fully-equipped galley overlooking the dinette. Forward is an island-queen VIP stateroom and aft, under the deck house, is the full-width, mid-ship, master stateroom. Measuring 11×16 feet, this space can be configured to an owner’s preference and be fitted with an island queen, either angled or squared off, or a pair of twin berths. With her unique layout, the IP535 affords the privacy found in an aft-cabin yacht with the advantages of the sedan-styling. Reuben Trane comments, “The only time at night that owners are likely to even remember that guests are on board is if they all choose the same time to raid the fridge!”

Jet Tern Marine this week announced the first in a new series of luxury motoryachts — the Selene 86 Ocean Explorer. The new yacht is the result of a collaboration between Howard Chen and his design team along with Dutch naval architect Guido de Groot. Construction of the molds for the new yacht has begun and hull number one is expected to be completed in time to debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in September of 2011.

<a href="http://oceanlines.biz/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/selene86_oceanexplorer.jpg" class="lightview" data-lightview-group="group-3282" data-lightview-options="skin: 'dark', controls: 'relative', padding: '10', shadow: { color: '#000000', opacity: 0.08, blur: 3 }" data-lightview-title="Artist'>
Artist's Rendering of the new Selene 86 Ocean Explorer -- Courtesy of Jet Tern Marine

Here’s how Jet Tern describes the boat in their press release:

The Selene 86 resembles her sisterships in that the design features a raised pilothouse, Portuguese bridge, and bulbous bow. However, this new model has more contemporary exterior lines as well as the addition of large side windows in the hull and stainless steel anchor pockets which is a departure from other Selene models. The blend of the traditional full displacement hull with modern design details and interior appointments qualify the new Selene 86 Ocean Explorer as a true luxury long range yacht.

Inside, the Selene 86 boasts four staterooms each with an en suite head. Though this boat could be handled by a couple thanks to sophisticated systems, crew quarters are integral to the design. Jet Tern anticipates that the Selene 86 will appeal to existing Selene owners who have expressed interest in a larger Selene model with more of a luxury yacht feel. The company expects the design to be popular in the European and charter markets as well. Selene Europe dealer Mark Seaton says, “The Selene 86 easily competes with yachts built at the finest European yards and we look forward to discussing this new design with clients at the Dusseldorf Boat Show, Jan. 23-31.”

The Selene 86 Ocean Explorer is designed to carry 4,000 U.S. gallons of fuel and cruise comfortably at 10 knots with a top speed of 13 knots; tank tests are under way and Jet Tern describes the boat as very fuel efficient for her class. Standard power will be supplied by twin Cummins QSM11 610hp engines and sophisticated fuel polishing and fuel monitoring systems are also standard features.

<a href="http://oceanlines.biz/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/selene86_oceanexplorer-2.jpg" class="lightview" data-lightview-group="group-3282" data-lightview-options="skin: 'dark', controls: 'relative', padding: '10', shadow: { color: '#000000', opacity: 0.08, blur: 3 }" data-lightview-title="Artist'>
Artist's Rendering of the new Selene 86 Ocean Explorer -- Courtesy of Jet Tern Marine

The company also said the hull will be built using vacuum resin infusion, which results in a lighter and stronger hull with few or no resin voids.

Pacific Asian Enterprises has confirmed to OceanLines that it has sold its first N120, a true megayacht with a pricetag nearly three times the next biggest Nordhavn, the N86. PAE President Dan Streech confirmed the purchase to OceanLines and said the buyer is a long-time Nordhavn owner, now purchasing his fourth vessel from the brand. For a look at some of the design details of the N120, see our original article about the program launch here.

Construction of N120-01 will begin in January 2010 and delivery is scheduled for August of 2012. The relatively modest construction time for the first of a new model is the result of the fact that all the molds and plugs are already finished at PAE’s Xiamen II factory in southern China. Designer Dee Robinson is working with the owner to finalize the interior design details. Since the hull is to be painted, final decision on hull color will wait until construction is well along. The megayacht will be ABS-certified.

The N120 has to be considered the ultimate achievement so far for company Chief Designer Jeff Leishman. Although 50 percent larger than the next-largest Nordhavn, the N120 will be recognizable to fans of the Nordhavn brand. Leishman and his deep and talented engineering staff have translated many of the traditional Nordhavn lines and design details into a megayacht that will weigh nearly as much as a Boeing 747-400; some 800,000 pounds. Even the factory itself, the Xiamen II facility, was designed with this vessel in mind, with everything from the footprint, to ceilings to overhead crane capacity intended to be capable of handling something this size.

The owner of N120-01 has previously owned an N62, N76, and N86, and, according to Streech, is “a joy to work with; knowledgeable and experienced with the new-build process.” Streech said, “We are very appreciative and excited to receive the order on Nordhavn 120 #1, which will be this owner’s fourth Nordhavn, so there is comfort and experience on both sides which will help elevate the N120 project to a spectacular megayacht level. Our new factory in Xiamen China was expressly designed to accommodate the N120 production line and our 35 years of experience in designing and building over 800 ocean going yachts has prepared us for this exciting moment.”

The price of the Nordhavn 120 is approximately $19 million. For reference, the typical price of a Norhavn 86 is less than $7 million.

We've got exclusive photos of the new North Pacific Yachts 28 as it undergoes final prep for sea trials later this week. Have a look here and read about the current schedule for shipping.

North Pacific Yachts 28 First Hull -- Photo: NPY

The new North Pacific Yachts 28 pocket trawler will splash for the first time and begin its builder’s sea trials as early as this week, according to Trevor Brice, company president. New photos from the factory show the boat undergoing final installation of trim and finish pieces before clean-up and launch. In the photo above you can see the overall lines of the boat, with the sheer mirrored by the rubrail.

North Pacific Yachts 28 First Hull -- Photo: NPY

A number of key design features are evident in these photos. In the photo immediately above, you can see the significant room on top of the deckhouse available for storing kayaks, a small dinghy or other cruising gear and toys. The aft cockpit, with its transom-centered door is also visible here, as is the open hatch to the lazarette.

North Pacific Yachts 28 First Hull -- Photo: NPY

In this view, you can see the tall transom, rudder and keel of the NPY 28. Note the hawse holes for ease of line handling.

North Pacific Yachts 28 First Hull, Overhead Stbd Bow -- Photo: NPY

The photo above shows a nice overhead view of the entire boat. Features visible in this shot include the forward cabin overhead hatchway (temporary hatchcover in place), sliding pilothouse doors, forward railings and anchor pulpit. Harder to see but key for inland waterway cruisers is the folding antenna mast, here show folded down as it would be to minimize air draft.

North Pacific Yachts 28 First Hull -- Photo: NPY

In this final photo, we see the helm station undergoing final systems installation. There will be plenty of room on the flat just ahead of the instrument cluster for a pod-mounted chartplotter.

Hull #1 of the NPY 28 shown in these photographs will begin its sea trials this week and is scheduled to leave the factory in China on August 20. By sometime in early September, potential customers should be able to get aboard in the Seattle-Vancouver area. OceanLines will have more photos of the sea trial shortly. In the meantime, we’ve added some more exclusive construction photos of the NPY 28 to its photo gallery here on OceanLines.

PAE announces the new Nordhavn 63 aft-pilothouse luxury trawler. We look at the specs and new features on this late-2010 boat.

Artist's Rendering of the New Nordhavn 63 Luxury Trawler

Pacific Asian Enterprises has announced the latest of the 4th generation Nordhavns, the Nordhavn 63. This new model builds on the successful 55 hull but uses new deck and engine room molds for a roomier, more efficient layout. The 63 has a narrower hull than the famous Nordhavn 62, which together with the 46 represents the first generation of Nordhavns. The new 63 will appeal to people who want the roominess and overall size of the 62 but can’t find a slip for the 20 foot 4-inch beam of the earlier model. The beam on the 63 is 18 feet yet the engine room and some interior spaces will feel much roomier than on the 62.

If you take a look at the Nordhavn line, there is a very interesting crossover point, a couple of them actually, in the mid-size models. We’ve put some of the key measurements in the table below. The 55 is the starting point, as it’s the hull for both the 60 and 63. The 55 has a forward (mid) pilothouse; the 60 keeps the same deckhouse but adds five feet in the aft cockpit, and finally the 63 moves the pilothouse aft and has the same measurements as the 60, except that it draws more water. In the midst of all these new, fourth-generation models, is the staunch veteran of the fleet — the 62; a first-generation Nordhavn that the company just can’t seem to kill. People still want to buy it because of its unequaled reputation as a tough, tried-and-true bluewater boat. The 62 is almost a foot-and-a-half wider than the newer 50/60/63 models and displaces almost 50 percent more. Only when you move up to the 64 and 68 do you get back into that weight class.

One of the driving forces for the 63 was customer demand for an aft-pilothouse boat like the 62, but with more room and less beam. Sounds like a tough design challenge; except that Nordhavn had the 55 hull to work with. In fact the launch customer for the 63, a couple from the mid-west, couldn’t find a 20-foot slip in their desired homeport, which forced the narrower beam requirement. It won’t be much of a compromise, however. The 63 has nearly two more feet of length at the waterline than the 62 and nearly three feet more length overall. Combine those with the new interior molds, enabling the larger engine room and better layout, and you have the reason Nordhavn agreed to do the boat.

Among the new features enabled by the interior mold changes are the crew quarters just forward of the engine room, with both a fixed and pipe berth. There is also a standard centerline guest stateroom and four large, opening port lights. The 63 will also feature a standard raised-panel cherry, first seen on hull #1 of the 75 Expedition Yachtfisher. The galley will have two V700 series Subzero refrigerators and one freezer. The main salon on the 63 is larger than that on both the 55 and 60 and offers two wrapping settees for entertaining, with the galley on the same level.

The 63 will be powered by the John Deere 6081AFM w/M3 rating of 330 HP @ 2,300 rpm, which is keel cooled to enable a dry stack exhaust. The transmission is an equally bullet proof ZF ZFW320 with a 4 to1 reduction gear. The Nordhavn 63 has a projected fuel capacity of 2,250 gallons contained in four main tanks and one aluminum “day tank” holding 31 gallons which will gravity feed from main wing tanks and center tank. As with all Nordhavns a range of at least 3,000 nm is projected.

The large open foredeck can support a tender as large as 17 feet and it comes standard with a Steelhead ES 1500 telescoping yacht crane with a 1500-lb. safe working load. Another design cue taken from the N75 EYF is the updated dry stack which trails aft of the radar platform and forms the support for the dual tracking domes atop the pilot house.

Delivery of hull #1 is expected in late 2010.
