 Sunreef Yachts said this week it will have the 70 Sunreef Power catamaran SEA BASS at the upcoming Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show next month.  This will mark the yacht’s American premiere.  It was launched last May and made its public debut at the Cannes Boat Show. SEA BASS is currently operating a charter yacht in the Caribbean and will be available for charter in the Bahamas following the show, via Sunreef Yachts Charter.

The first boat in the 70 Sunreef Power series is the yacht JAMBO, which was built in an Expedition version (note the wave-piercing bows in photo below) for Laurent Bourgnon, the famous Swiss-born sailor and adventurer.  Bourgnon is currently in French Polynesia with his family on a five-year, round-the-world tour aboard JAMBO. He has outfitted the yacht with a high-efficiency drivetrain as well as wind generators and solar panels and calculates his range under power, at 8 knots, as 20,000 miles.

New Artemis 46 Undergoes Seatrials in China

Howard Chen’s Jet Tern Marine has launched a new planing motoryacht line called the “Artemis” with a 46-foot debut model.  Jet Tern Marine”s Zhu-Hai, China, shipyard is best known for its Selene line of displacement yachts.  According to the company, the new Artemis line was developed “in response to consistent and strong market demand for a high-performance yacht built by Jet Tern.”  The company said that, eventually, models from 36 to 66 feet will be developed

The Artemis 46 is a two-stateroom, two-head flybridge motoryacht, powered by twin 380hp diesels from Yanmar and is designed to cruise at a top speed of 23 knots; a performance level verified during sea trials of hull 4603.  The yacht has a beam of 14 feet 4 inches, a waterline length of 38 feet 11 inches, and a draft of 3 feet 9 inches.  The yacht has a fuel capacity of 400 U.S. gallons, with water and holding tanks of 100 and 50 U.S. gallons, respectively.

The Artemis 46 has walkaround decks, flybridge, and covered cockpit. A sliding door opens to the saloon with a contemporary design and built-in settees with seating for four around an adjustable table. The interior layout is open with the helm station to starboard and the galley down two steps to port.

Jet Tern says the first four yachts have already been sold in China.  The company press release downplays it somewhat, but I believe the Chinese market for this type of yacht may represent the best real growth potential in the near future.  China has embarked on a program of luxury marina building around the country and is deliberately fostering a yachting culture. I expect to see offerings like the Artemis, perhaps even more upscale, from some interesting sources over the next several months.  The base price of a new Artemis 46 is approximately $690,000, including freight and commissioning.

Bow Running Shot of New Leopard 38 Sailing Catamaran

Leopard Catamarans showed off its brand new 38 sailing catamaran at last weekend’s Annapolis Sailboat show.  The boat rounds out the company’s sailboat fleet, with models now at 38, 40 and 46 feet.  Leopard also has two Powercats available, the 37 and 47.  OceanLines reviewed the full Leopard Catamaran line here.  According to the company, “She is focused on performance, comfort and offering an abundance of outdoor space. With her generous sail plan and hull design the Leopard 38 offers high performance yet is highly practical and easy-to-use. ”  The new boat is likely to suit both first-time cat buyers, perhaps a young family, or an experienced cruiser who wants a strong, fast shallow-draft boat for island hopping.

In true catamaran fashion, interior spaces are roomy and comfortable.   The 3-cabin owner’s version features two spacious double cabins in the port hull while the entire starboard hull is dedicated to an owner’s suite featuring double cabin, desk and seat, large head compartment, and plenty of storage.  Generous headroom throughout plus substantial storage capacity as a result of under-bunk lockers in each cabin gives even more space for onboard relaxation.  

In Leopard Cat’s words, “The exterior of the Leopard 38 is equally well thought out, with a large cockpit hardtop providing excellent shade and weather protection and a powerboat-style stepped transom enabling easier boarding.  The vertical front windscreens give superb panoramic visibility, more effective use of interior volume as well as sun protection.  Environmental considerations were also central to the design, with solar panels installed as standard on the helm hardtop to charge the onboard batteries.”

Standard base price for the Leopard 38 will be $279,000, ex-factory in Cape Town.

North Pacific Yachts 28 First Hull -- Photo: NPY

The new North Pacific Yachts 28 pocket trawler will splash for the first time and begin its builder’s sea trials as early as this week, according to Trevor Brice, company president.  New photos from the factory show the boat undergoing final installation of trim and finish pieces before clean-up and launch.  In the photo above you can see the overall lines of the boat, with the sheer mirrored by the rubrail.

A number of key design features are evident in these photos.  In the photo immediately above, you can see the significant room on top of the deckhouse available for storing kayaks, a small dinghy or other cruising gear and toys.  The aft cockpit, with its transom-centered door is also visible here, as is the open hatch to the lazarette.

In this view, you can see the tall transom, rudder and keel of the NPY 28.  Note the hawse holes for ease of line handling.

The photo above shows a nice overhead view of the entire boat.  Features visible in this shot include the forward cabin overhead hatchway (temporary hatchcover in place), sliding pilothouse doors, forward railings and anchor pulpit.  Harder to see but key for inland waterway cruisers is the folding antenna mast, here show folded down as it would be to minimize air draft.

In this final photo, we see the helm station undergoing final systems installation.  There will be plenty of room on the flat just ahead of the instrument cluster for a pod-mounted chartplotter.

Hull #1 of the NPY 28 shown in these photographs will begin its sea trials this week and is scheduled to leave the factory in China on August 20.  By sometime in early September, potential customers should be able to get aboard in the Seattle-Vancouver area.  OceanLines will have more photos of the sea trial shortly.  In the meantime, we’ve added some more exclusive construction photos of the NPY 28 to its photo gallery here on OceanLines.

In the picture above you get a good sense of the general lines of the NPY 28, with its gracefully sweeping sheer, mirrored by the molded rubrail.  You also get a nice view here of the full-length keel and the shoe for the rudder.  The prop on this boat will be fully protected from damage during minor groundings.  The tall transom will keep following seas outside of the cockpit.

In the second picture, we see the port side of the hull, with  what looks to be a very smooth finish.  You can see some of the molded “planking” surface detail in this view, too, that will contribute to the traditional look of this pocket trawler.

The third photo gives a good look at the stem and fine entry of the bow.  You can see that the sharp vee of the forward hull transitions to fairly flat sections aft, which will enable the higher-end speeds the 28 will be capable of.  The hard chine runs the full length of the hull and will contribute both to roll dampening and turning performance.

In the last two photos, the interior bulkheads are easily visible at the beginning of the interior finishing process.  This begins to give the viewer a sense of the space of interior compartments.  According to North Pacific Yachts, the boat is still on schedule for delivery to North America late this summer.  Competition in this pocket trawler market will heat up considerably when it does, given the remarkable pricing on this boat (see earlier OceanLines article on the NPY 28 here).

Sunreef 62' Classic design exterior

Built at one of the most famous shipyards in the world, Sunreef Yachts’ power and sailing catamarans are luxurious, yet tough ocean-going boats designed and built to the highest standards and with some of the latest technology available.  The famous Gdansk shipyards in Poland — former home of Lech Walessa and his revolutionary union mates — now produce Sunreef catamarans in hulls from 60 to more than 150 feet in length.  The boats are built in both aluminum and high-tech composites in a facility that keeps nearly all the skilled craftsmanship in-house.

History

Sunreef is a young company, started in 2000 by entrepreneur Francis Lapp.  Since then, more than 40 vessels have been delivered and are in service around the world as liveaboards, vacation yachts and charter boats.  In fact, many of the yachts have three different standard configurations — owner, semi-owner, and charter — acknowledging the specific design requirements of each type of usage. 

The company has benefitted from the availability of experienced shipbuilders and craftsmen in the local economy and recently acquired an additional large tract of land on the nearby Vistula River which will feature a 25,000 square meter production facility capable of building yachts longer than 50 meters.  Naval architecture, engineering and interior design are all handled internally.

Models

Sunreef began building sailing catamarans and has recently expanded into the power cat arena as well.  The Sunreef 62 Sailing has been the most popular model to date, although the company has several much larger yachts in construction and has delivered several larger models.  A 114′ aluminum sailing cat is currently under final construction in the yard.  Here’s a brief rundown on the models currently available from Sunreef:

Sunreef also has designs in-hand for a custom 130-foot day catamaran suited for entertaining large groups on the water.  Sunreef will also undertake full custom design  Here’s a closer look at two of the current models, the 62 Sailing and the 70 Power.

Specifications:

The 62 Sailing Cat (classic model) was derived from the larger Sunreef 74 and features the same spacious central flybridge.  This centralizes the sailing controls at this upper helm station and also offers room for all the guests to enjoy an unobstructed view while sailing.  A “modern” version of this same boat offers an interior with avant-garde decor and design, while this model features a more conventional interior finish.  The 62 in a typical owner version would likely have four luxury cabins, while a boat designed for charter work would have more beds.  While exact prices will vary significantly depending on outfitting and trim, a new 2009 Sunreef 62 would likely have a list price in the neighborhood of EURO 1.33 million ($1.78 million).  These prices reflect the premium quality not only of the interiors but the epoxy resin, vacuum-infused and carbon-reinforced hulls.  All Sunreef yachts are classified CE A Ocean Category, which is the highest seaworthiness rating available.

Specifications:

The 70 Sunreef Power, with its dramatic lines and powerful look, applies the same luxury standards of the sailing cats to the powerboat realm.  Powered by twin 870 HP diesels,  the boat will reach a speed of 30 knots.  The hull is built using a resin-infusion process, which results in a greater strength-to-weight ratio.  Sunreef announced today the launch of hull #2 in the line — an expedition version of the boat, which takes advantage of the slippery cat hull and uses smaller, 370 HP engines, will cruise at 12 knots, with an astounding 8,000 nautical miles range at 10 knots.  Even at 15 knots, the boat will exceed 3,000 nautical miles.

The first Sunreef 70 Power, JAMBO,  made its public debut In Cannes last June.  The boat spent this past winter on an Atlantic crossing and in late February and early March passed through the Strait of Magellan, making port in Puerto Mont, Chile.  With the first part of a family circumnavigation complete, the boat is now being provisioned for its trip across the Pacific, with first stops at Robinson Crusoe and Easter Islands, enroute to French Polynesia for a longer stay.

SEABASS, known as the “Exclusive” version, has two owner suites and two guest cabins, a fully equipped flybridge with second helm station and jacuzzi.  The boat also features an innovative diving platform.

In a few short years, Sunreef has built an impressive portfolio of both aluminum and high-end composite yachts.  The firm takes advantage of the relatively economical yet extremely experienced labor of the Gdansk maritime workforce and has made significant progress establishing itself as the premium builder of luxury, ocean-going catamarans.

Artist Rendering of New Kadey-Krogen 64' Expedition Yacht

Kadey-Krogen yesterday confirmed that it is proceeding with a program to build a new flagship for the company’s model lineup; the 64′ Expedition.  As first reported here in Oceanlines last November, the new boat is designed to combine the seaworthiness and classic lines of the Expedition series with maximum interior spaces.  We’ve included the latest illustrations of the design from Kadey-Krogen. They haven’t changed too much since the original back in November. The company has settled on a continuous-duty rated engine from John Deere. The following description is from the Kadey-Krogen press release:

“Until now, the largest model offered by Kadey-Krogen has been their 58’ but the company believes there is room and interest in their buying audience for a bigger model so long as it can still be handled by a couple. The 64’ Expedition is designed to be handled comfortably by two people, yet guests and/or crew can be accommodated with privacy for all as the 64′ is available with multiple cabin and head layout options.

The saloon of the 64′ Expedition is located where every Kadey-Krogen saloon can be found: forward through the welded aluminum weather-tight doors off the fully covered aft deck. The portside galley remains amidships, directly adjacent to the saloon, so those who are prepping and cooking are still a part of the conversation. The galley is well appointed with top-of-the-line stainless appliances including a four-burner Viking range, full-size Jenn-Air refrigerator, a super-quiet Miele dishwasher, a microwave/convection oven, and trash compactor. As a first for Kadey-Krogen, there is a separate dining room to starboard, opposite the galley. The design crew at Kadey-Krogen can also accommodate the “must-haves” of an owner and will ensure the 64’ Expedition meets the needs and expectations of its owners.

A wide walkway along the starboard side provides exterior access from the aft deck to the massive foredeck that is capable of handling a 17-foot tender and related equipment. For those that favor the looks of an expedition yacht but prefer to operate a vessel outside the pilothouse in fair weather, the 64’ Expedition is available with a flybridge. Kadey-Krogen vice president, Larry Polster, believes this new boat gives the company an opportunity to showcase how it can cater to cruisers who favor designs with maximum interior space without compromising handling, safety, or range. He also points out the architectural integrity of the design and says, “We don’t stretch boats. The 64’ is built using a dedicated mold and like the 55’ it incorporates three keels. Engineering aboard the 55’ was so well received that it was natural for Kadey-Krogen to extend those features and functions to the 64’.” Both Expedition models offer complete access to all machinery spaces from a single point of entry. Owners can move from the rudder post to the bow thruster through watertight doors in a machinery space boasting 6’6” of headroom. This feature makes the 64’ unique in class and size, setting the 64’ apart from its competitors.

The innovative three-keel design by Kadey-Krogen allows the Expedition model to have greater fuel efficiency than other keel forms. Each of the skegs to port and starboard is counter-faired, with the trailing end specially shaped to rotate water flowing into the propeller in the opposite direction of the propeller rotation resulting in greater operating efficiency.

The balanced, easy to propel hull form combined with continuous duty 231hp John Deere engines gives the 64’ a range of 3,000nm at 9 knots. Supporting equipment in the engine room includes fuel polishing, oil exchange, and fire suppression systems; hydraulic stabilizers as well as bow and stern thrusters; chilled-water air conditioning; and a universal power converter—all are standard.

Like all Kadey-Krogens, the hull is built using vinylester and isophthalic resins, knytex mats, and US-made Cook® UV-protected gel coat to protect the vessel’s gel coat. Critical areas of the hull will be reinforced with a special impact-resistant fiberglass mat containing Twaron, the same fiber used to give body armor its “bullet-proof” capability. Twaron is an aramid fiber that is five times stronger than steel and up to 60% lighter than ballistic steel. This strong yet light fiber helps maintain a moderate displacement-to-length ratio that is a signature of Kadey-Krogen engineering and again results in better fuel economy.”

Northwest Trawlers NW 50 During Seatrials

Peter Whiting, co-founder of Northwest Trawlers reports in his blog that sea trials of the first NW 50 are continuing at Anacortes, Washington.  Peter has some nice new photos of the boat, a couple of which we’ve reproduced here and he reports that testing of various systems, including the dual autopilot system aboard this boat, is moving forward.  You can read our coverage of the launching of hull #1 here.

Fully loaded, this NW 50 carries 1000 gallons of fuel, 300 gallons of water, and over 200 gallons of black and gray water. This represents about 11,000 pounds of fluids. First Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer Under Sail -- Photo: PAE

Nordhavn this week released details of the performance under sail of its new 56 Motorsailer, which has been on sea trials with the Nordhavn commissioning team and its new owner, John Graham.  The assessment of these trials comes from parent company PAE’s president, Dan Streech, who says, “I think any questions as to whether the Nordhavn Motorsailer would be an adequate sailor  is now behind us.”
