New American Tugs 49 Ready to Splash

Tomco Marine Group plans to launch the first hull of the new American Tug 49 within the next few weeks, with the hope of having the boat ready for a public debut at the Seattle Boats Afloat show, which begins Sept. 10.  The AT49, new flagship of the American Tugs fleet, features dual staterooms and propulsion form a single Volvo D-9, rated at 575 HP.  The 49 is essentially a stretched version of the 41, with the same beam, but an additional six feet in length, which makes for an extremely spacious galley, salon and aft cockpit.

The formation of parent company Tomco Marine Group was the brainchild of Tom Nelson, former president of Nordic Tugs.  His partners are Mike Schoppert and Kurt Dilworth.  The first two models in the AT line were the 34 and 41. Those familiar with the company history say Nelson and his partners wanted to build a boat similar to the Nordic Tug but with some differences focuses on structure and ease of customization. American Tugs is estimated to build perhaps half the number of boats per year that Nordic Tugs builds, perhaps 25-27 per year, with 50-60  or so from Nordic Tugs. Obviously, the company also has a shorter history than Nordic Tugs.

American Tugs’ Northeast regional dealer Prestige Yacht Sales was formed in 1990 by Michael Frank, joined 10 years ago by business parter Tom Pilkington. Prestige sells high-end sailing yachts such as Nauticat and X-Yachts, as well as power boats from Hunt Yachts, and American Tugs. Frank says the American Tugs line was a natural for his customer base, many of whom are moving in their retirement years to trawler-style power boats from the sailboats they’ve been on most of their lives.

Frank says his customers appreciate the build quality and structural integrity of the American Tugs line, and most of his boats are delivered with upscale wood soles, optional flybridges and substantial electronics suits. For example, Prestige has a flybridge-equipped 41 on order that is undergoing sea trials before shipment from the factory in La Conner, Washington. This boat has a full sapele and maple sole in both salon and pilothouse, 8 kW Northern Lights generator, extra large house battery system, and a three-display Garmin GPS 5212 touch-screen chartplotter system, couopled with a Garmin GMR 404 four-foot open-array radar antenna. The boat has a list price of about $732,000, but does not include shipping. There is a west-coast delivery program for customers that allows them to take advantage of delivery out there, followed by cruising in the San Juans or up the Inner Passage to Alaska. Like all American Tugs, the new 49 has a semi-displacement hull, which enables it to cruise with top fuel efficiency at 8 knots or so, but also with good efficiency at 12-14 knots. Top speed will be somewhere in the high teens.

The new 49 will take advantage of its extra length to offer a full dinette and eating counter, as well as the bigger salon and aft cockpit. It will also be delivered with even more standard equipment, including watermaker and hydraulic-powered windlass and davit, normally big-ship items. Firm 2009 pricing on the 49 has not been set yet but is expected to be approximately $880,000 base, with boats being equipped and out the door for under one million. An initial price for a basic 2008 boat with a Raymarine electronics package was approximately $895,000.

Prestige will be displaying a 34 and 41 at the Newport International Show and the Norwalk Boat Show in September.  The dealership has sales responsibility for the northeast region, which is from Cape May, New Jersey, up north.
