HB Marine and Independence Green Yachts yesterday announced a partnership that will form a joint venture to develop the Independence 60 Luxury Yacht that IGY started a few years ago. The Independence 60 is billed as the “world’s first ‘no compromise’ sustainable yacht.” A combination of solar cells, hydrogen production and storage and fuel cells provide complete independence from fossil fuel.

Here’s what the two companies had to say yesterday:

“The partnership between HB Marine, owner of a patented technology for the production, storage, and use of hydrogen aboard marine vessels, and Independence Green Yachts, developer of the solar/hydrogen powered Independence 60 power yacht, is a very compelling and timely combination. The joint venture will offer the marine industry fully integrated and self sustainable yachts (like the Independence 60) as well as clean energy power and propulsion systems for new construction and retrofits of existing yachts.

IGY is the developer of the Independence 60, the first totally self-sufficient, solar/hydrogen powered motor yacht that requires no fossil fuels or internal combustion engines. “Building a sustainable boat that can cruise cleanly, quietly and without ever having to use fossil fuels has been my dream since the Navy,” said Fred Berry President of IGY. “In conjunction with HB Marine, we can make this dream a reality.”
HB Marine has developed and patented internationally, a hydrogen-based, multi-use power and propulsion system for all types of marine vessels using readily available technology. “We have been searching for the right marine partner to bring this clean technology to market. The unique design of the Independence 60 effectively integrates the best of clean energy marine power and propulsion technologies , which will open a new era of simple, clean, quiet, reliable and sustainable yachting,” said Bruce Wood, Managing Director of HB Marine.”

The power system for the Independence 60 represents the very cutting edge of energy generation, storage and management. To-date, that title has been held by Island Pilot’s DSe Hybrid, developed by Reuben Trane. The DSe has the solar cells and vertical wind turbines, but still relies on a diesel engine/generator to recharge the batteries on cloudy days or when energy usage exceeds a little more than 6 kW. The Independence 60 has twin azimuthing electric motors. The system takes electricity from the solar arrays, or from the battery bank, and uses an electrolyzer to separate pure water from a watermaker (or, downstream in the process from a fuel cell)  into molecular hydrogen, which is then stored in a room-temperature, normal atmosphere metal and then provided upon demand to a fuel cell, which will generate a lot more electricity to replenish batteries, or to provide power to an inverter, and through a service panel to the electric motors.

Island Pilot DSe 12m Hybrid to Debut at Fort Lauderdale

Island Pilot’s revolutionary DSe Hybrid 12m will debut October 30, 2008 at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the company has announced. “Green” passagemaking will take a giant leap forward when the DSE Hybrid arrives on the scene.

The luxury cruiser is capable of running, on a bright sunny day, at 6 knots without using any diesel fuel at all. A 6 kW solar array, mounted on the top of the deckhouse and bridge supplies all the power needed to travel at that speed, or to run air conditioning, cooking and other hotel loads while at anchor. When more speed or power is desired, two Steyr 75 HP diesels, with integrated generators, can be started up to add either electrical power or drive power through the ZF saildrives.

Like all boats, the DSe 12m has a sweet speed for optimum cruising and hers is at 7.25 knots, a not atypical trawler speed, where she gets 10 NM/gallon fuel economy. That translates into a range of more than 1,000 NM at 7 knots with no solar contribution. With a 3 kW contribution from the solar array, the boat can cruise 2,200 NM at 6 knots. Performance of the solar array and the hull was confirmed in the initial sea trials conducted by company principal Reuben Trane and naval architect George Petrie on the G T Men River in Zhuhai City, China, where the boat is being built.  Top speed for the DSe 12m is approximately 13 knots.  The hulls were extensively tank-tested prior to construction for efficiency and bow wave and wake characteristics.

The DSe 12m features two staterooms; one a master suite forward on the main deck with 270 degrees of visibility and its own private dressing area and head. Another stateroom aft, under the bridge deck, has two twin beds that can be combined to form a queen; along with a dedicated head.

The salon features the galley aft, with settee and table forward to starboard and a couch across on the portside. The bridge deck has two chairs at the centered helm with a u-shaped lounge aft. The two hulls of the catamaran design feature aft steps down to the water level and there is a dinghy hunt on a davit between the two hulls aft.

The DSe 12m comes extremely well-equipped, including the  9′ dinghy with Torqueedo electric motor. A full electronics suite includes GPS touchscreen plotter, high definition radar, digital fish finder and XM Radio and weather from Garmin.  A Tecnautic “Fly by wire” electronic engine and helm control and autopilot complete the helm.

Full airconditioning, in 4 zones, along with a KVH satellite TV antenna and DirecTV receiver are included in the boat price. The galley includes a Seaward 3-burner radiant cooktop, 14 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer, GE Advantium microwave oven, Splendide Washer/Dryer combination. The water heater has an 11-gallon capacity, and each head features SeaLand Vacuflush heads.

The interior features all teak and holley soles, teak built-ins and entertainment center and the hi-low coffee/dining table.

The diesels are Steyr Motors Serial Hybrid Propulsion Systems, with 75 HP engines, inline 7 kW motor and 5 kW electric generator. The DSe 12m has a unique battery bank of 20 Odyssey AGM Deep Cycle batteries. The manufacturer says they are capable of 400 full-discharge cycles, but Island Pilot says in-house testing suggests they’re capable of significantly more than that.  Any discharge cycle less than full will also increase the number of cycles available. The bottom line is these batteries appear to be significantly capable for a couple of years’ worth of normal cruising.

The DSe 12m has a current price of $550,000, which includes delivery in the U.S., with all commissions and duties paid. Island Pilot is also embarking on two derivatives of the 12m.  The first is a smaller version, called the SPRQ — Solar Power — Real Quiet — which uses a single central hull and single engine, with two slim “amas,” or outrigger-like hulls. A third design is the DSe 18m, a 60-foot boat with a 25-foot beam, featuring a 14 kW solar array and a 4 stateroom/4 head layout. Island Pilot says it is working now with Steyr Motors to develop a larger hybrid drive for the 18m.
